This is a great opportunity for you and your puppy (under 18 weeks before the classes begin) to join others and have a terrific time while learning important life skills. Our once-a-week for six weeks course will teach your puppy manners and obedience commands such as sit, down, leave it and stay. We will show you the best ways to overcome common puppy problems, such as play-biting, housetraining, chewing, jumping up etc. Classes even include some supervised play time for your puppy to learn good socialisation skills so join us at the SPCA and give your puppy a head start in life!

Puppies must be under 18 weeks of age and have received their first two DHPPiL vaccinations. We will need proof of this before letting you bring your pet along.

Please note that the first class is theory-based so please leave your dog at home.

This is a fun, beginner-level course designed for well-socialised, adolescent and adult dogs over 10kg. Course content includes obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, come, leave it, loose-leash walking, an introduction to heeling and not jumping up. There is also an emphasis on the prevention of future problems such as handling issues and food bowl guarding.

In order to attend, your dog must be over 18 weeks of age and weigh more than 10kg. Your animal must be fully vaccinated including up-to-date DHPPiL and rabies shots. We will need written proof of these before your dog can start the course.

The courses run for six weeks and each class is an hour long. The first class of each course is a theory class so please leave your dog at home.

This is the same course as the large dog obedience course but with a tiny twist – dogs must be under 10kg.

As with the large dog version, dogs on this course must be over 18 weeks but under 10kg. Your animal must be fully vaccinated including up-to-date DHPPiL and rabies shots. We will need written proof of these before your dog can start the course.

Courses last for six weeks and each class lasts an hour. The first class of each course is a theory class so please leave your dog at home.

Sometimes group classes do not fit your schedule or your dog has a particular issue you would like to address. The SPCA Behaviour & Training department offers private classes, by appointment only, that can solve these issues as well as providing a safe environment if your dog gets stressed around other dogs or humans.

Please contact our team on 2232 5567 for more details.

If your helper takes your dog for walks, or if you enjoy taking your dog out to get some fresh air, then this is the course for you. We’ll teach you and your dog how to loose-leash walk which ensures your animal is always under control and safe, rather than running after cats or sniffing the rubbish on the street.

This is what you’ll learn:

  • Why do dogs pull on the leash?
  • What is loose-leash walking?
  • Attention exercises
  • Getting your dog “on the phone”
  • Polite passing
  • Greeting other people nicely
  • Making turns

Places are limited to four students per course so please send us your application form early to avoid disappointment. Certificates are issued on completion of the class.

Frequently Asked Questions :

The SPCA Basic Obedience Dog Training Course gives you the skills to help your dog become a happy, well-behaved and confident companion. This course provides excellent opportunities to practice loose-leash walking in a variety of different situations and, by focusing on a single skill, it will allow both owners and pets to learn faster and succeed through positive reinforcement.

Everyone who takes a dog for a walk is encouraged to join this course.

After completing this course, we recommend you enrol for our Basic Obedience Dog Training Course during which you will learn how to handle and manage your dog in an environment where you need the most control – around other people and other dogs. Once you and your dog have mastered basic obedience training, our intermediate class will introduce you to the wonderful world of clicker training. When done correctly, clicker training enables you to teach your dog almost any behaviour.

We take a step-by-step approach, creating the right kind of environment to teach your dog how to walk on its leash even when it is distracted. We use positive reinforcement techniques which helps dogs learn faster while lots of practice helps both humans and animals master the art.
