Hong Kong has witnessed a huge increase in pet ownership in recent decades and pets have become an integral part of thousands of families in Hong Kong. However, pet keeping can be challenging in a busy city like Hong Kong.
Since the day we opened our doors in 1921 the SPCA has been a pioneer of animal welfare principles and one of our key programs is to create harmony in the community between pet owners and non-pet owners.
Harmony in the Community
Harmony comes from mutual respect. This happens when the pet-keeping community behaves responsibly, and the non-pet keeping community appreciates and understands the benefits companion animals bring to the community. Here are some of the ways the SPCA helps foster harmony:
- Giving advice and tips for local housing estates and members of the public via free talks
- Conducting workshops on a whole variety of pet care topics such as cat and dog grooming, senior pet care, pet care for helpers, and nutrition
- Collaborating with the Home Affairs Department District Offices, District Councils and housing estates to create fun-filled ways for people to interact with animals
- Helping educate through a series of “Harmony in the Community” posters and education leaflets, free-of-charge
- Helping Facility Management teams to improve their management of animal-related matters
We also provide advice to property developers and consultant companies on the planning and building of true “Pet-Friendly” estates and facilities which can provide high quality environments for pets, pet owners and non-pet owners alike.
