SPCA x HKJC SumMEOW Festival

This August, we are celebrating 25 years of our Cat Colony Care Programme (CCCP), pioneering initiative that has transformed cat welfare in Hong Kong. We are grateful for our title sponsor’s support, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, to hosting a two-day festival to commemorate such special occasion continuing to raise cat’s welfare.

Since its launch in 2000, the CCCP has provided free-of-charge desexing, vaccinations, microchipping and preventive treatments for over 86,000 street cats. Partnering with dedicated CCCP volunteers, the programme has worked tirelessly to enhance cat welfare and create a more harmonious environment. Through this month-long festival, the SPCA aims to raise awareness about cat care, promote responsible ownership, and support the life-changing work of the CCCP.

As cats enter their senior years starting at seven years of age, like humans, they will slow down and become more prone to age-related ailments. They may also suffer from painful joints and may not be able to jump or groom themselves like they used to. Kidney and thyroid disease are also common and may result in overweight issues. Dental problems may affect their appetite which is why cats will start to lose weight as they age.

Pet Photography by Danny Kwan

Danny Kwan is a well-known Hong Kong photographer, specialising in portrait and wedding photography with a realistic yet glamorous style. Several years ago, a chance invitation led him into the world of pet photography. Since then, he has been active in Hong Kong’s pet photography scene and has been invited multiple times to travel abroad with pets, with journeys spanning Japan and Europe. This includes Hong Kong’s first-ever month-long pet travel shoot covering five European countries. Each trip is not only an image record but also a story of the shared journey between humans and animals.

In addition to photography, Danny is also an enthusiastic animal volunteer who regularly fosters rescue animals. He uses his camera to document their transformation from feeling fearful to regaining trust. He strongly believes that photography is not just about capturing light and shadow but also a way to help every animal find a caring and loving home.
