Issue 124 – A Journey Towards Pet-Inclusivity: Building a More Pet-Friendly Hong Kong

The SPCA has been hard at work lobbying for pet-inclusivity in Hong Kong!

This was no small task—it took collaboration, persistence, and a shared vision to turn this dream into reality. Join us as we look back on our pet-inclusive journey.

April 2023

After the success of our Star Ferry Harbour ride, the SPCA moved full steam ahead to make transportation accessible and affordable for pets, ensuring they could travel with their families across the city.

June 2024

After an encouraging meeting with the Managing Director and Commercial Director of KMB Bus, expressing a heartfelt desire to help “the voiceless” and make public transportation accessible to pets.

August 2024

As part of the SPCA’s Tsing Yi Summer Wellness Festival, the first-ever pet-friendly double-decker bus ride took place in Hong Kong, thanks to the collaborative efforts of SPCA, KMB, and YAS Microinsurance.

Over 800 humans and 400 pets boarded the bus, embarking on a journey to our SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre in Tsing Yi.

September 2024

We successfully consulted for a second pet-friendly bank in Hong Kong and saw more shopping malls opening their doors to pets. These malls embraced thoughtful design changes, such as dedicated parking spaces and pet-friendly lifts.

October 2024

Inspired by the overwhelming response from our last event, KMB launched Pet Tours. For the first time ever, humans and their pets could now explore six specially designed routes for just HK$60!

KMB also committed to donating 10% of the proceeds to three animal shelters, including the SPCA—a powerful statement of their dedication to giving back to the community.

November 2024

The SPCA hosted a dog-friendly cinema screening and red-carpet event for the film “An Abandoned Team”.

With the incredible support of MTR Lohas Mall and Emperor Cinemas, dogs joined their families for an unforgettable movie experience.

While we celebrate these milestones, we continue to urge businesses to prioritise animal welfare over commercial gains. Pets are not just a vehicle for the pet economy —they are our family.

As we look ahead to 2025, we dream of a Hong Kong where pet-friendly transportation is the norm, not the exception. We hope more public transportation providers will join forces with trailblazers like KMB to make the city more accessible for pet owners.

This is about more than convenience — it’s about creating a community that values and includes all its members, furry ones included.
