The SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre Officially Opens

The new Tsing Yi Centre will act as a flagship for the SPCA’s animal welfare and educational efforts

(Hong Kong, 12 March 2024) The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) (“SPCA") celebrated the grand opening of the highly anticipated SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre (“Tsing Yi Centre”), constructed with funds donated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, today.

Since its establishment in 1921, the SPCA has played an integral role in the development and enhancement of animal welfare in Hong Kong. The official opening of the SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre in Tsing Yi marks the next milestone in its century-long mission to improve animal welfare and promote pet-inclusivity. Spanning over 93,000 square feet, the five-storey Centre will host the largest animal hospital in the New Territories and acts as an anchor for the SPCA’s animal welfare programmes and education outreach. It is a statement of modernity, with the spacious facility being equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including Hong Kong’s first immersive animal welfare classroom.

A beacon of hope for animal welfare in Hong Kong

With a growing number of people interested in pet ownership in Hong Kong, there is an increased need for improved animal welfare services. As the new Tsing Yi Centre commences its operations, the SPCA can further enhance and expand its existing services, which will significantly increase the number of animals rescued, treated, rehabilitated, and ultimately rehomed.

Over 8,000 square feet of the Tsing Yi Centre is dedicated to animal adoption to accommodate and rehome more animals in need. An additional 14,000 square feet is allocated for animal birth control and welfare work to expedite the reduction in the population of abandoned and unwanted animals. The location of the new Centre also helps the SPCA shorten its response time for animal rescue calls in the New Territories, where rescue demand is the greatest.

Scheduled to start community support operations in the second half of 2024, the Tsing Yi Centre houses one of Hong Kong’s largest animal hospitals, occupying 16,500 square feet for surgery and hospitalisation uses. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as a full diagnostic laboratory, digital and dental radiography, ultrasonography as well as acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and physiotherapy services, the hospital will provide quality care for animals in need, both owned and unowned.

Inspiring the next generation through Hong Kong’s first-ever immersive and interactive animal welfare learning experience

The new Tsing Yi Centre boasts four classrooms, including Hong Kong’s first-ever immersive and interactive classroom for animal welfare education. The immersive classroom showcases 270-degree animated scenarios and utilises sensors and touch technology to engage and educate children (K2-P4) about animals and animal welfare. By creating a fun-filled, technology-powered learning experience, the SPCA aims to cultivate and inspire deep respect, care, and understanding for all animals amongst the younger generation.

Expansive community space and pet-friendly facilities that connect all animal lovers across the city

The new Tsing Yi Centre provides a pet-friendly space for the community, an exclusive pet-friendly rooftop with harbour view, fully fitted conference and seminar rooms, a modern pet grooming area, a uniquely designed lifestyle retail area, and upgraded dog and cat boarding facilities. These pet-friendly facilities not only offer Hong Kong pet owners a comprehensive service but also provide a perfect venue for community events that bring animal lovers under one roof.

The first event to leverage the community space at the Tsing Yi Centre will be the SPCA’s adoption event “Dog Adoption Date” on Saturday, 23 March. Apart from meeting rescue dogs out of their kennels at the SPCA, dog lovers will be able to explore a pop-up marketplace with products for both pets and their owners.
