NAME:
Sylvia Tan
TITLE:
Veterinary Surgeon
NATIONALITY:
Singaporean
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:
Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) (Hons I), University of Queensland, Australia
Certificate of Veterinary Acupuncture (CVA), Chi Institute, Taiwan
CAREER PATH:
After graduation, I returned to Singapore and worked in a small animal practice for several years. I then moved to Hong Kong, to take up employment in a private practice for two years before joining the SPCA in November 2019. During my first 1½ years in Hong Kong, I spent my free time volunteering with a veterinary team that cares for the health of captive wild animals. Over the course of my career, I have attended various courses and training to improve my knowledge and clinical skills. I completed the Certificate of Veterinary Acupuncture with the Chi Institute in 2018. Currently, I am in the midst of pursuing an Australian membership qualification in Avian Medicine and Surgery.
VETERINARY INTERESTS:
Small animal internal medicine and avian medicine.
REASONS FOR WORKING AT THE SPCA (HK):
I have always wanted to be a veterinary surgeon to help not only the privately owned animals, but also the less fortunate, abandoned or stray animals. I was a long-term volunteer at the Singapore SPCA, and have also volunteered at various animal shelters overseas. After spending several years in private practice, I decided to join the SPCA in Hong Kong so that I can be more actively involved in animal welfare.
PETS:
A 14-year old Maltese Terrier called “Yuan Yuan” which means round in Chinese! Four talkative parrots (a Moustache Parakeet, an Indian Ringneck, a Blue-fronted Amazon and last but not least an Eclectus) that speak a similar range of vocabulary! They are all in Singapore under the care of my family due to their age and export regulations!
INTERESTS:
Travelling, hiking and snow skiing.
