SPCA COVID-19 Pet Food Assistance Programme

Over view

In recent months the SPCA has noted increasing concern over the impact of the economic effects of the COVID-19 on the pet owning community. The SPCA itself has seen a slight increase in owners citing financial difficulties when giving up their animals

Funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club “COVID-19 Emergency Fund” The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has established a Pet Food Assistance Programme. The Programme aims to provide some financial relief and support to dog and cat owners who have been financially impacted due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Project Objective

The objective is to support pet retention and avoid animal abandonment and keep families together with their dogs and cats – alleviating a small degree of financial pressure.

Targeted beneficiaries

  1. Dog and cat owners who have financial difficulties due to COVID-19, e.g. unemployment or less income occurring on or after 1st February 2020.
  2. Dog and cat owners who are CSSA recipients.
  3. Elderly dog and cat owners who are living on their own.
  4. Potential beneficiaries can apply directly. Social workers can also refer cases.

Details of Food Assistance Programme

The programme aims to provide free food for up to 4 animals (dogs or cats) per applicant / family for a period of 1 -2 months dependent on case assessment, demand and availability. In addition some hygiene products will also be provided.

Assistance is limited and will be distributed to qualifying families and individuals on a first come – first served basis whilst aiming to assist as many families and dogs and cats as possible. Beneficiaries will be able to arrange collection at one of the SPCA centres .

In exceptional cases alternative collection points or delivery may be arranged.
