Every month on average the SPCA re-unites 25 lost pets with their owners. This can be a very distressing experience for both animal and owner and in many instances such stories do not always have a happy ending. There are several things that you can do to try to reduce this risk to your pet:

• Ensure that your dog is well-trained and remains under proper control at all times
• Get your dog vaccinated against rabies and licensed as this involves implanting a microchip that can be traced back to you (remember to keep your contact details updated). Cats too can have microchips implanted and in many instances are required for identification if you are going to export your cat overseas (ask your veterinary surgeon for details)
• Have your cat or dog wear a safe, visual means of identification which has your name & contact number on it
• Have a few good quality photos of your pet as a means of advertising its loss or confirming its identity
• Make sure your flat /premises are escape proof
