There are two main goals to our Volunteer Dog Walking programme:
- To increase the adoptability of the SPCA homing dogs by providing opportunities for them to interact and socialise with people, be familiar with the urban environment and as well as to get some valuable exercise. Quality training and socialisation enhance the chances of finding suitable homes for the dogs and enable them to settle into their new homes more easily.
- To give the general public the opportunity to become familiar with our organisation and each walker acts as an ambassador for our dogs. The programme gives our dogs and organisation more exposure to the general public which again enhances the chances of adoption. Additionally, animal interaction is therapeutic, and what better way to spend your time than to bask in the unconditional love of an animal while getting some exercise and fresh air?
We anticipate that training and walking will be fun and social for both the dogs and their walkers. Each volunteer will be able to participate during regular SPCA hours of operation and can choose a qualified dog to exercise. Walks will initially take place in the SPCA building, and then move into the neighbouring areas around the Centre as volunteers gain experience and skill in handling the animals.
All interested volunteers will be asked to increase their animal knowledge and learn training skills through the following procedures:
Donating at least 10 hours towards assisting kennel keepers in their daily duties. This will allow you to become familiar with SPCA standard operating procedures and the dogs themselves.
Assisting in at least one full dog obedience course (six 1 hour classes total), suitability of which will be discussed with individual volunteer. Volunteers may also be asked to take a preselected dog from the homing kennels to accompany them through training.
Volunteers will begin walking the dogs accompanied by a qualified dog walker. This will allow each volunteer to observe procedures and feel comfortable before venturing off on their own.
After the volunteers have completed and passed their Training and Assessment, they are welcome to come at their preferred times to walk the dogs that are suitable for them. All volunteers will be required to record information about their time spent with each dog to keep track of their physical and social behaviour and to talk about with our staff members any unusual encounters or observations.
To apply, simply click 'Download Form' below, fill-in and return to us at the SPCA Wanchai Centre (in person or by post). Please note that all volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Applicants will be contacted individually when places of their preferred days of the week are available. Currently, we have a greater need for walkers on weekdays and non-public holidays, please indicate on the Form if you are able to commit to supporting the programme on these days.
Families and friends are encouraged to participate together. Spend quality time together while contributing towards a worthy cause!
