  Animal Welfare Vehicle

The Animal Welfare Vehicle was built with a generous grant from the Sir Robert Ho Tung fund.

The Animal Welfare Vehicle (AWV) is a mobile surgical unit dedicated to providing sterilisation for dogs and cats where needed. This initiative is designed to tackle the problem of the overpopulation of animals that results from thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens being born each year. This problem is particularly prevalent in the New Territories and Outlying Islands, where the village culture is that the animals are "loosely owned" usually entire, and allowed to wander around the village. This results in most females producing at least one litter of offspring each year. The majority of these litters do not find homes and are either dumped on the street or at rubbish containers. Once on the street these animals are at risk of injury, illness, starvation and an inhumane death. Only a lucky few may be picked up by the SPCA (HK), Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department (AFCD) or members of the public.

The AWV and it's team visit villages, educating the public and promoting the neutering of dogs and cats as a means of birth control. The presence of the mobile facility ensures that there is minimal effort for people to access the service.

The problem of an increased number of stray animals resulting in overpopulation can only be prevented through education as well as by action.
