Wellness Clinics

"Wellness" clinics have been introduced in all of our SPCA centres as an added client service and to improve patient care. Members who visit our clinics every year for a medical check and vaccination for their dog or cat; will from now on be offered a choice of either:

  • A basic veterinary exam and vaccination
  • A full "wellness" exam and vaccination

There are two types of "wellness" exam packages available to clients depending on the age of their pet (as disease risks increase in older pets):

  • Dogs and Cats under 7 years
  • Dogs and Cats 7 years or above

Why is it necessary to provide "wellness" clinics for pets?

  • Over the past 10 years there has been an increasing level of client awareness and education worldwide with regard to responsible pet ownership, pet health and well being.
  • Veterinary medicine (as with its human counterpart) has moved increasingly towards preventative medicine rather than treating the problem when it occurs examples include heartworm prevention, flea treatments and annual vaccinations. The old adage ˇ§Prevention Is Better Than Cureˇ¨ runs true now more than ever.
  • Just as people are starting to have annual medical checks (particularly in their later years); pet owners should be able to choose the same level of care for their pets.
  • Information gathered at "wellness" exams becomes part of the pet's medical history and can be critical in the case of an emergency or sudden illness

The full wellness exam and vaccination package includes:

  • 30 minute in depth consultation and exam (checking all body systems) with individual pet report cards provided for client reference
  • Annual vaccination either DHPPiL* for dogs or FVRCP** for cats
  • General health blood profile (Biochemistry, Haematology and Electrolytes) tailored to age
  • Faecal and urine checks
  • Oral exam including a plaque stain
  • Anal gland express and nail clip as necessary
  • Blood pressure measurement
  • Discussion on nutrition, exercise and behaviour /training as necessary

*DHPPiL: Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis
**FVRCP: Feline Rhinotrachietis and Calici virus (Cat Flu) and Panleucopenia.

Optional extras* (or recommendations) available to clients include:

  • Other vaccinations: Kennel Cough or Rabies (including either AVID or ISO microchips)
  • Eyes: Dry eye, eye stain or glaucoma testing
  • Heartworm, Feline Leukaemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus blood tests
  • Further blood or laboratory tests e.g. rabies serology (for pet passport scheme), liver function tests and thyroid function tests

Boarding and Grooming Services

Both these services have continued to prove very popular with our members.

  1. Grooming:
Demand for our grooming section has been so high we now employ 3 full-time groomers (Ms Gabbie Lam; Ms Chu Hoi Yan and Ms. Kathy Lai). Grooming is available by appointment at our Hong Kong & Kowloon centres and from August 2007 at our Pokfulam centre. Please click here for more details.

  2. Boarding:
Likewise; our boarding service is often fully booked weeks in advance. Daily monitoring of food and water intake, toilet habits and demeanor by our trained kennel staff enable any health issues to be detected early. In addition having the facility on site means any problems can be brought to the immediate attention of our vets. In recent years we have upgraded both our dog and cat boarding; improvements include sound proofing, air conditioning and new kennel designs. Please click here for more details.
