What have been done in other parts of the world?

Due to the cruelty of the trade, United States has banned the seal product trade since 1972. Belgium and Netherlands also banned the import of all seal products in 2007. On 5 May 2009, the European Parliament passed a bill by a 550-49 vote which bans the import of seal products on the basis that the hunt is inhumane.

Why Hong Kong?

As the European market ban on import of seal products comes into effect in 2010, the trade is believed to move to China as a manufacturing base and market. Hong Kong is a conduit for the flow of seal pelts to China. By banning import of seal products in Hong Kong, we believe the seal trade can be disrupted and thereby stop the Canadian commercial seal hunt, and seal hunting in other countries

Will this affect the economy of Hong Kong?

NO. Seal pelts are not currently contributing to the local economy, and a call to end the trade will not take away any employment from the local job market. It will have practically no impact on Hong Kong
