Award Categories


Canine Hero Award


Recognises the outstanding contributions of individuals or groups in the field of dog rescue, rehabilitation and adoption.

Canine Welfare Enhancement Award

Acknowledges the achievements and accomplishments of individuals or groups in the field of humane education, animal welfare legislation or policy development with respect to dog welfare.

China Canine Welfare Award

Pays tribute to the outstanding effort of individuals or groups in China (Including Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) whose work significantly contributes to the improvement of canine welfare, with a focus on innovation and measurable implementation or impact.


Background


"SPCA Canine Welfare Award (Donated by Genlin Foundation)" is the first China based award promoting canine welfare in Asia. It is awarded by SPCA Hong Kong and generously funded by Genlin Foundation.

The awards are established to recognise and exemplify the significant contribution or advances for the betterment of canine welfare in Asia (Please refer to appendix for qualification). The winners will receive a cash prize of $10,000.00 (USD) each and will be sponsored to attend the award ceremony during "Asia for Animal Conference" in June 2011 in Chengdu, China.

"Genlin Foundation" (www.genlin.org) puts an emphasis on cultural and civilization charity. This foundation is an extension and new development of "Peng Xin Chao Foundation". With the influence of Mr. Peng Xin Chao, the Genlin Foundation has strong faith in our future, and has high hopes that we can work together as a group and rebuild a society that is full of wisdom, fairness, freedom and care.

The SPCA Hong Kong (www.spca.org.hk) is a non profit animal welfare organization was founded in 1921. SPCA is a charity whose remit is not only actively to pursue the cause of animal welfare primarily in Hong Kong and our Outreach works in China.


Enrolment and Deadline


Nominators/Candidates must read carefully all the relevant information and complete the appropriate forms. Nomination forms are now available from the Administrative Office) or be downloaded from website (www.spca.org.hk).

Nominators/Candidates must deposit their completed forms and all supporting information to SPCA, No.5 Wan Shing Street, Wanchai, Hong Kong or by fax or by fax: 28027229 or email : ryan.lau@spca.org.hk by 12:00 noon (Beijing time) on the 14th of April 2011.


Eligibility and Submission Requirements

  1. Self nominations are welcome.
  2. Nominations are open to all individuals, non governmental, charitable or non profit entities, privates companies, government representative and universities from different sectors.
  3. Nominations are open to applicants whose work has contributed to the improvement of canine welfare in the Asia (link to see list of countries).
  4. The work of the nominee must have been in operation for a minimum of a year or more.
  5. Each application must include the contact information of two referees who have first handed knowledge of the cited achievement and contributions for a minimum of 6 months.
  6. It is the nominators' and candidates' responsibility to obtain prior consent from the referees to ensure that they have agreed to be contacted.
  7. The referees of the short listed candidates will be contacted to provide support and recommendations of the cited work. However applicants are also welcomed to include reference letters together with their nomination form.

Others


In submitting nominations for the Awards, emphasis should be placed on the applicant's accomplishments to date. Applications should include a brief history (in 500-1000 words) of how their work has made a sustained and measurable contribution in the field of canine welfare in Asia. Nominators may wish to consider the following criteria in describing the nominee's work:
  • Numbers of years involved in animal welfare.
  • Outstanding and significant record of achievements.
  • Extraordinary contributions towards progress in the knowledge and practice of canine welfare in Asia, with a substantial and sustainable impact in relation to the impact specific award category.
  • Evidence that contribution have had significant influence.
Applicants may also list and provide any supporting evidence and commendations, biography or curriculum vitae that include qualifications and honors with the application.


Announcement of Results and Prize Presentation


Award winners will be notified of the results by telephone. Once selected, winners will be sponsored to receive the SPCA Hong Kong Award in person at a ceremony to be held at the Asia for Animals Conference June 2011 in Chengdu, China. One representative of each award winner will be sponsored for transportation (Economy class air fare) and accommodation.

All award winners will receive trophies in their respective category and a cash prize award of 10,000.00 (USD). At least 10% of the prize should be used for canine welfare.


Adjudication


All nominations will be screened and considered by a jury consisting of representatives from the SPCA Hong Kong. The short listed candidates will be presented to the Panel of judges, comprising of representative of SPCA(HK), Animals Asia Foundation and community of Genlin Foundation. They will be responsible for examining and advising on the adjudication mechanisms, endorsing all adjudication results. The adjudication process will be conducted in the strictest confidence and the Panel deserves the right to withhold the granting of any award. The panel will be final on all matters about the process or the definitions, interpretations of guidelines of submission and rules and conditions. Nominators and candidates must abide by the final decision of the panel.
