The SPCA (HK) hosted ˇ§China for Animalsˇ¨ Shanghai 2008 Conference Together with Shanghai Small Animal Protection Association (SSAPA) Fostering Animal Welfare in the Mainland
(HONG KONG, 14 January 2008) The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) [SPCA (HK)] held in association with the Shanghai Small Animal Protection Association (SSAPA) ˇ§China for Animalsˇ¨ Shanghai 2008 Conference on 5th and 6th January 2008 in Shanghai.
The Conference, held by the SPCA (HK) and SSAPA, co-organised by Shanghai Small Animal Veterinary Association (SSAVA), gained substantial support and was well-attended. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the SPCA (HK), the SSAPA, Hong Kong Vet Association, Institute of Law, HK Public Relations Professionalsˇ¦ Association Ltd., Extra Trading Company Limited, Cathay Pacific Airways, Dragonair, Pet Food Institute, Intervet Hong Kong Ltd., Royal Canin, Bayer HealthCare, and New World Mayfair Hotel, gave valuable support to the Conference.
The two-day Conference gathered more than 173 visitors from over twenty regions extended from Changchun in the northern region to the Haikou in the southern province of Hainan, sharing valuable animal welfare experiences from overseas nations and Hong Kong with the attempt to uplift animal welfare and the related legislation in China to keep up with other nations on the international arena, in educating citizens that man and animals can co-exist given the respect, and to bring a safe environment for the Chinese citizens to live in.
This first-time ever ˇ§China for Animalsˇ¨ Shanghai 2008 Conference brings insight into aspects of animal welfare and share the experiences from overseas nations and Hong Kong in the attempt to bring harmony to the community; enhance the level of veterinary medicine in China, and level of respect veterinary surgeons on animal welfare; enrich owners with knowledge in caring for animals and the sense of Responsible Pet Ownership; bring to members of public the correct sets of value of animal welfare; through education, attempts to reduce animal abandonment; vaccinate dogs against rabies thereby preventing the spread of this deadly diseases for humans, dogs and all mammals.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HK) The SPCA (HK), first formed in 1903 by a group of volunteers, was re-structured in 1921. Throughout the decades, the SPCA (HK) has promoted kindness to animals, protection of their well-being, fought animal abuse, and broadcasted the message RESPECT FOR LIFE BEGINS WITH CONCERN FOR ANIMALS far and wide through education campaigns.
The SPCA (HK) has introduced a number of programmes to help the government to improve animal welfare. Besides finding new caring owners for the abandoned and strays, the SPCA (HK) promotes animal birth control through the various programmes introduced, allowing the owned, loosely-owned and stray animals to be desexed. The SPCA (HK) also operates six animal clinics throughout Hong Kong, some of them also equipped with surgical facilities, to allow the health and well-being of our faithful companions be cared for.
The SPCA (HK) continues its efforts to ensure that people and all animals can live in harmony.
