The Shangri La group of hotels has joined a growing number of organisations that are showing commitment to conserving sharks and safeguarding their welfare by announcing this week that they will be removing shark fin from their menus.
Last year the SPCA in conjunction with the Humane Society International focusing on the shark welfare aspect distributed copies of the book ˇ§Man and Sharkˇ¨ (which graphically illustrates the reality of the shark fin trade) to the senior management in many of Hong Kongˇ¦s hotels and clubs. Raising awareness of the negative shark welfare associated with the trade complemented the work of many conservation groups who raised awareness of the related conservation issues. Gradually society is becoming more aware that individual choices can make a difference both for the protection of animals and the environment.
