Joint Effort by Students of St. Mary's Canossian College and the SPCA to Stage the "Be a Responsible Pet Owner" Exhibition

The exhibition "Responsible Pet Ownership - Harmony in our Communities" held by the Education Department at the Central Oasis Gallery (Old Central Market) in 2010 was deemed a great success. It had been sponsored and supported by the Urban Renewal Authority and drew positive feedback. Subsequent to the event, teachers and students at St. Mary's Canossian College invited us to hold a similar exhibition at their school from February 20-24. This provided a good opportunity for more students to learn about the importance of animal welfare.

Additionally, a group of prefects at the school having visited the SPCA exhibition at the Gallery posted their comments and thoughts online to share their learning experiences. Renee Chung, one of the students, wrote, "... I have learnt more about the basic needs of animals, such as the freedom from hunger and freedom from injuries. As a dog owner myself, I realise that I need to be a responsible pet owner and to work towards a harmonious community where animals and people can live happily together. I hope this message can be brought to our society successfully!"

Ms Tracy Chan, the subsidiary course teacher at the school said, "The reason for inviting the SPCA to hold the exhibition at school is because the topic 'Responsibility' fits in with the school theme of the year. Students can learn not only to appreciate the value of Responsibility but through understanding and being considerate can help to build up interpersonal and harmonious relationships."

Alongside the display of the educational panels, the students designed other fun activities, such as the engaging booth games "Puzzle Fun" and "Roll - Roll - Roll the Ping-Pong" with quizzes and prizes. Participants could play and review at the same time what they had learnt from the exhibition boards as well as grasping concepts of caring about animals' basic needs.

On February 20, the school's Parents' Day, the school also allowed the Society to run charity sales to raise funds for our animal welfare programmes.

We would like to thank St. Mary's CanossianCollege for their sponsorship and support. We also thank all the teachers, parents and students for their generous donation to the SPCA and for their help to the animals. The enthusiasm and initiative of the students in offering to help spread the message of kindness to animals is a great encouragement to our work.
